Now that the French ‘vacances’ are knocking on the door, Bordeaux is officially turning into one big music, dance and art festival. Starting July, plenty of festivals will take place all over the metropole. You can go dancing on the quai, listen to free music concerts on the other side of the Garone or listen to classical music concerts in different locations around Bordeaux. Apart from that, there are street art and food truck festivals and let’s not forget the summer sales!!!  Here’s the list of things to do in Bordeaux in July 2019. Dance on the Quai

Dansons sur les Quais is a series of dancing classes and events where people gather to dance together and learn a variety of dancing genres like Tango, Salsa, Bollywood, Forro, Hip Hop, Street Jazz, Zumba, Country and more. These activities will be guided by professional dancers from different dance schools in Bordeaux and they are completely free, so this is a great opportunity you don’t want to miss. The dancing events will take place on the quai almost daily from mid- July to mid – August. For more details and the full program check out the website of Dansons sur les Quai.

The summer pavilion on the right side of the river

Like every summer in the last five years, the Orangeade association opens its summer pavilion on le Quai Deschamps (in the Bastide neighborhood) with live concerts every Friday (18:00 – 01:00) and Saturday (12:00 to 01:00). These events, however, are not just music concerts but rather a place for friends and families to spend the weekend with yoga classes, creative workshops, activities for kids and more. The events will take place throughout the summer from July 5 to August 31 and are free. For the specific program of each event, follow my weekend posts about what to do in Bordeaux. Bordeaux Metropolitan Summer

Like every year Bordeaux Metropolitan invites you to discover the city and the area around it through a series of cultural events and activities. More than 100 activities of music, dance, public reading, theater, circus and gastronomy will take place between June 20 and August 31. These events are so widely spread across the metropolitan area of Bordeaux that you are guaranteed to discover places (especially parks) that you have never heard of before: Parc d’Observation in Floirac, Parc du Viver in Merignac, Parc Camponac in Pessac and many more. Summer Sales

Soldes d’été are six weeks in the summer during which you can find really good deals on clothes, shoes, electric supplies, toys and more. Les soldes d’été will take place from June 26 to August 6.

Zinefest

Zinefest is a festival dedicated to comics, illustrations, photography and poetry. The festival includes several expositions and concerts by both French and international artists and will take place in several venues in the south of Bordeaux. Check out the full program of events here.

Jalles House Rock

Le Jalles House Rock is one of the biggest rock festivals in Gironde that annually proposes a rich program of local and international acts. The goal of the festival is to share the love for rock music with as many people as possible and that’s why the entrance is free (they do however encourage you to donate to the Estran association that organizes the event). This year the festival in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles takes place on July 4-6. For more details check out the website of the festival.

Festival Rues et Vous

This is the 12th edition of Festival Rue et Vous , a performance arts festival that takes place every year in the charming medieval town of Rions. This year the festival will take place on July 5-7 and will include a rich program of theater, dance, circus and music shows for both adults and kids. Summer of Music in Medoc

Les Estivales de Musique en Medoc is the only music festival in France dedicated exclusively to young laureates of international competitions.  The festival was created in 2003 to discover new talents in classical music. The concerts are hosted in some of the most prestigious châteaux in the Medoc area and are followed by wine tastings. The concerts will take place on July 3-12. See the full program here.

Celebrate the French National Day

July 14th is the French national day which is celebrated in every city in France. Like every year, Bordeaux will hold a series of popular events and parties, the main ones are:

14 Juillet Bordeaux
  • Military parade at Quai des Chartrons –  18:30
  • The traditional dance party at Placette de Munich – Quai Louis XVIII (in front of Quinconces) – 20:30
  • Fireworks show above the Garonne river between Pont de Pierre and Place de la Bourse – 22:45

Apart from the traditional national day events, plenty of other parties will take place on July 13-14 to celebrate this day. Follow the blog for updates.

Bordeaux Food-truck Festival

This is the biggest gathering of food trucks in the region of Nouvelle Aquitaine. Tens of different food trucks will be spread around the Gironde department in five events that will take place between June and September. This festival aims to mix street food with the finesse of the wine world. As part of this gastronomic event, visitors can taste the wines of the hosting châteaux and the specialties of food coming from all corners of the world: French, Italian, Brazilian and many more. The program of the festival also includes free concerts, exhibitions, escape games, activities for kids and more. This month two food truck events will take place in the Medoc region.

Les Nouvelles Saisons – music festival

Les Nouvelles Saisons is a classic music festival taking place in Bordeaux on July 16-25 in three locations: Cour Mably, Cathédrale de Bordeaux and la Grande Poste. The festival was created by the violoncellist Jeremy Genet and the composer Christian Lauba offering a great variety of musical styles (baroque, romantic, modern and more). La Bataille de Castillon

La Bataille de Castillon is a spectacle taking place during more than 10 evenings in the summer, replicating the famous fight from 1453. Castillon-la-Bataille, the town where the show takes place also hosts many activities and events revolving the big show: tours of the city, exhibitions and workshops of medieval art and more. Braderie d’été

Every summer the main streets of Bordeaux are getting filled with stands of clothes, shoes, toys, house supplies and more – this is the Bordeaux summer Braderie. If you’re in town for winter sales take the opportunity to check out the stands of more than 250 merchants on rue Porte Dijeaux, rue Sainte Catherine and rue des Trois Conils. The Braderie will take place on July 17-20. For more details click here.

Arcachon En Scene

Archachon en Scene is a popular music festival that brings big French and international acts to perform in this beautiful town. This year’s program includes Amir and Kimberose (July 29) and GIMS  (August 2). For more info check out the facebook page of the event, for tickets click here.

Bordeaux Open Air

Bordeaux Open Air is a series of free summer electronic music events, all set in different locations and with a great city vibe to them. Every event is dedicated to a different country and hosts its DJ’s for sets of electronic music. The first event this summer will take place on June 30 at Square Dom Bedos and the second one on July 7 at Jardin public. The locations of the following events have not been published yet. Quai des Sports

This is the 11th edition of this fun sportive event that takes place every summer (July 13 to August 11) at the Parc des sports Saint Michel.  The program this month includes a variety of sportive activities such as a fitness night, beach volleyball, basketball, BMX, beach wrestling and more. The festival will be accompanied by artistic and music events. Many of the activities are aimed for kids and teenagers and are a perfect solution for entertaining them in the center of Bordeaux during the summer.  Check the full program here.

Puppet Theater for Kids

Le Guignol Guérin, founded in 1853, is the oldest puppetry show in France with daily spectacles for kids in Parc Bordelais during the summer  (July and August). The show usually starts at 16:00 but can be canceled or postponed when it’s raining or getting too hot. Read more about the theater here.

Two street art exhibitions

Two amazing street art exhibitions are going to presented at the Institut Bernard Magrez throughout the summer. The first one (from May 28 to September 1st) is called Instincts, an exhibition by Mika which is one of Bordeaux’s most prominent street artists. The other one (July 5 – October 6) is an exhibition by one of the most famous street artists in the world, Seth (Julien Mallard) who also happens to be French. For more details click here.

Rivages et Vertigo Sea – a new exhibition

The Base sous marine is hosting a new and intriguing exhibition starting June 21. It is, in fact, a combination of two exhibitions addressing the themes of sea and shore. Rivages is a photography exhibition by the artist Harry Gruyaert and VertigoSea is a video installation by the director John Akomfrah. For more information about the exhibition click here.

Dance at la guingette chez Alriq

La Guinguette chez Alriq is a tavern at the Bastide neighborhood, on the rive droite of the Garonne. During the summer the place is full with locals who escape the more touristy rive gauche and come to enjoy live concerts on the river bank. The Guinguette is open from Thursday to Sunday. It looks like it’s going to be quite a rainy weekend so I guess most of you will be looking for some indoor activities. Some of the options this weekend include the big fair of antiques and art and the Trente Trente art festival. The international magic festival will take place in Théâtre Fémina on January 25-27. This year seven world-class artists (magicians and illusionists) will offer you breathtaking spectacles that you wouldn’t want to miss. For more info and tickets click here.

Salon des Antiquaires et de l’Art Contemporain

The Salon of Antiques and contemporary arts is one of the biggest events in Bordeaux for Antique hunters. Around one hundred exhibitors, rigorously selected from different areas of France and other countries in Europe, will present their collections and knowledge in history and art. Le Salon des Antiques et des art contemporaine will take place at the Parc des Expositions from January 26 to February 3. Entry is 10 euros and free for kids under 15 years old. Bordeaux rock Festival

The Bordeaux Rock festival will take place on January 23-27 in different music venues in Bordeaux: The Iboat, Quartier libre, El Chicho, L’avant scène, Void, La Tencha, La Voute, L’imperio, L’Antidote, and Salle des fêtes du grand parc. Le Cirque Arlette Gruss

Arlette Gruss is a traditional French circus, founded in 1985. The circus has performed in Bordeaux several times in the last two decades and this time it’s coming back with a new show. This year they offer a free, guided visit to the circus village to those who bought a full priced ticket to the show. The circus tent will occupy place de Quinconces from January 10 to February 6. La nuit des conservatoires

This Friday (January 25) le Conservatoire de Bordeaux invites you to a special night with concerts and performances from all the disciplines taught at the conservatory. Besides concerts, the night includes workshops and lectures. The concert is free and open to all. For more info click here.

Vietnam circus 

This week (January 23-26), Pin Galant in Merignac hosts the amazing show Teh Dar by the new Vietnamese circus. Teh Dar means dancing around the fire in the K’h, the language of an ethnic minority in central Vietnam. The circus uses the costumes, the colors and the special traditions of the region in their beautiful show. For tickets and more info click here.

Trente Trente – Emerging arts Festival

Trente Trente is an annual festival, created to promote emerging artists in Bordeaux and Nouvelle Aquitaine in general. Check out the full program that includes dance, music, theater, circus and more. The festival takes place on January 18-31 in different theaters and cultural spaces across the metropole (see the full list here).

Tremplin de 2 Rives

This is the 7th edition of the Tremplin de 2 rives festival which aims to promote the musical talents of Bordeaux. The festival includes eight evenings from January 5 to February 9. This weekend is dedicated to Bordeaux west. On Saturday (January 26) five bands will take the stage of Salle Quintin Loucheur. For more details click here.

Hostens Trails 2019

Every year the Gironde department organizes plenty of sportive events that are open to the public. The first one of 2019 is about to take place this weekend (January 26-27) in Hostens. The event offers several trails for both runners, walkers and Nordic walkers. The price varies according to the trail and prior registration is mandatory. For more info click here and here. Album Artworks Exhibition in Pessac

Album Artworks is an exhibition of five artists that have worked with Bordelaise bands and created both cd covers and accessories for music concerts. The exhibition will be presented at Sorti 13 in Pessac between January 25 to Mars 3. For more info about the artists click here.

Visions graphiques Exhibition

Interactive special effects exhibition

Do you ever wonder how the special effects you see in movies are made? If you do then you should check out the “Effets speciaux” exhibition taking place these days in Cap Sciences. It’s an interactive exhibition that allows you to see the behind the scenes of the cinema world and experiment with different special effects like the green screen. Entry prices range from 6.5€ to 9€ and free for kids under 5 years old. For more info click here.

Le Salon du Livre Ancien de Bordeaux

Le Salon du Livre Ancien de Bordeaux brings together more than 40 French exhibitors for the biggest ancient books event in the Southwest of France. Every year more than 3000 people attend this event to look for rare pieces of literature and discover old book from every genre: fiction, kids books, old magazines and more. The event will take place at Cours Malby on January 19-20.

Tremplin de 2 Rives

This is the 7th edition of the Tremplin de 2 rives festival which aims to promote the musical talents of Bordeaux. The festival includes eight evenings from January 5 to February 9. Tour de la Métropole en courant

The Tour de la Métropole en courant is a march/run with the goal to support hospitalized kids and to make their dreams come true.
L’hôpital des enfants et Aladin (the association behind the event) will host you for a coffee on January 20 at 8:30 before leaving in the direction of
d’Ambarès et Lagrave at 9:30. For more info click here.

A creative workshop at the Kaléidoscope exhibition

Before this beautiful exhibition comes to its end on February 17, Institut Bernard Magrez continues with its workshops for kids and adults. This Saturday (January 19) the museum is hosting a creative workshop around the works of Koralie, one of the most impressive artists presenting at this exhibition. After a presentation of her colorful works, the host will guide you and your kids in making your own piece of art in the same spirit. The workshop is open to kids older than 5 years old. The Big Lebowski French Fest

Architectures du Bauhaus – Photography exhibition

This year marks 100 years to the birth of the Bauhaus movement. To celebrate Bauhaus Architecture, Bordeaux hosts a photography exhibition by the photographer Hans Engels. The exhibition will be presented at the Goethe-Institut Bordeaux from January 17 to Mars 9. to For more info click here.

Noche Del Pintxo in Talence

After many successful Pintxo nights in Halle de Bacalan, the new Halle de Talence market continues this great tradition. As the name indicates, Noche del Pintxo is all about Pintxos, with ingredients coming solely from the market. This Friday (January 19) between 18:00 and 22:00 you’ll taste Pintxos and vote on the Pintxo of the month. One of the most fun things about these evenings are the prices: Pintxo = 2€, a glass of wine = 2€.  For more info check out the facebook page of the event.

Swing Party

Winter Sales

Winter Sales have finally started a few days ago with great discounts on everything from clothes to shoes and electric supplies, so this is the time to hit the stores. Les soldes d’hiver will take place during six weeks between January 9 and February 19.

Braderie d’Hiver

Fête des Bœufs Gras

Bazas in the Southern part of Gironde is a beautiful town that attracts many people with its weekly market. But what Bazas is mostly known for is its Beef. Since 1283, on the Thursday before Mardi Gras, the city of Bazas hosts the famous “Fête des Bœufs Gras” that celebrates the Bazas Beef. An Oxen parade takes place on the central streets of the town with the Oxen judged by a jury of experts. The day ends with a banquet where you can taste the famous meet. The event will take place on February 28.

Steven Wilson in concert

Steven Wilson is the lead singer of the British band Porcupine Tree, which also had an amazing solo career during the last 15 years. On January 22, he will perform his best songs at Théâtre Fémina. For more details and tickets click here.

Massive attack arrives to Bordeaux

Festival de 2 rives

Le Carnaval des 2 rives  (March 3)  takes place on both sides of the Garonne river. This is a modern festival (created in 1996) that has all the best features of a traditional carnival such as costumes, shows, and a big parade. The parade will start at 14:00 at the Allée Serr, on the right side of the river and will pass to the other side through Pont de Pierre ending at the Village Carnival at Place Pey-Berland at 15:30. The Village Carnaval will be open until 18:00 with a big scene including dancers and demonstrations of augmented reality. For more details click here.

Swing Festival

Every March, for more than a decade now, Bordeaux has been hosting the Swing Art Festival (March 15-17) where swing dancers come from all around the globe to teach the dancers of Bordeaux their art of Swinging. This festival is much more than just swing dancing, it’s three days of live music, art, vintage markets, workshops, and a get together of many people from all around the world to celebrate this sweeping dance. Jumping international de Bordeaux

Jumping International de Bordeaux is a big riding equestrian event that includes competitions, spectacles and a fun fair. The event will take place February 7 -10 in Parc des Expositions de Bordeaux. More than 250 exhibitors will present their horses at the event which will include activities such as: Jumping world cup, amateurs competition, Equine Health Forum, a show of Iberian horses and more. Last chance to visit the Kaléidoscope exhibition

This is the last chance to see the beautiful street art exhibition in Institut Bernard Magrez. The Kaléidoscope exhibition is all about feminine art, hosting nine female street artists to present their works in a genre that is usually considered more masculine. Les Fous Rires de Bordeaux

Les Fous Rires de Bordeaux (16-23 March) is a very unique humor festival hosting more than 80 artists and different activities taking place all over the city. The festival is an opportunity to experience humor in different forms, such as live on stage, in pictures and even through cooking!!

There are two parts to the festival:
Festival IN, with well-known artists on stage.
Festival OUF– that proposes free activities during the whole week of the festival such as workshops, happenings, entertaining children in hospitals and more.
