A weekend is enough to see Bordeaux properly, and it’s best spent in the city itself. Day one covers the historic centre, its landmarks and the riverfront; day two is slower, around Chartrons and the markets. If you can’t skip wine, give the city a day and a half and a nearby château the other half. No car needed.
Bordeaux is one of those cities people think they know because of wine. But every time friends come to visit, I end up rediscovering it with them. Over a couple of days, you can walk through the historic center, spend time by the river, explore local markets, and eat really well without trying too hard. It’s one of the few cities in France where a weekend actually feels complete, not rushed.
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how I’d plan a weekend in Bordeaux today, based on how I usually do it with friends and family. This itinerary works especially well if it’s your first time in Bordeaux and you enjoy exploring on foot.

Day 1 – Historic center, main landmarks, river walk, apéro and dinner in the city

If you have more time
Add a half-day or full-day trip to Saint-Émilion (Here are some good options for half-day or full-day tours to Saint-Émilion from Bordeaux).
Or Arcachon if you prefer more ocean vibes.

A bit of practical information before you visit Bordeaux
What area should you stay in?
Saint-Pierre (city center) – best location for first-time visits.
Chartrons – quieter, local feel, great wine bars.
Jardin Public area – ideal with kids, close to the park and still walkable to the center.

Do you need a car in Bordeaux?
No, not if you’re staying in the city. I would actually avoid renting a car for a short trip. Bordeaux is easy to explore on foot and by tram. For day trips like Saint-Émilion or Arcachon, the train works well. You’ll only need a car if you’re planning to visit smaller villages or more remote wine regions.
When is the best time to visit Bordeaux?
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit. The weather is pleasant and the city feels more relaxed. Summer is lively but can get very hot. Winter is quieter and still enjoyable, but expect rain. If you’re planning a short trip, January is probably the only month I’d avoid.
Do you need to book restaurants in advance?
Yes, especially for dinner and on weekends. Good places fill up quickly, so it’s worth booking at least a day or two ahead.
Should you visit wineries if you only have a weekend in Bordeaux?
I wouldn’t prioritize it for a short trip. Two days are better spent exploring the city itself. If you still want a quick wine experience, Château Pape Clément in Pessac is a great option close to Bordeaux.
Should you take tours in Bordeaux?
Bordeaux has 362 historical monuments (second only to Paris), and in this article, I’ll name the most important ones. If you’re interested in a deeper understanding of the history and architecture of Bordeaux, I highly recommend taking one of these tours:
A two-hour guided walking tour offered by the tourist office
A guided bicycle tour of the historic center and the Chartrons district.
Classic Bordeaux – Audio Tour – My self-guided walking tour in Bordeaux
Day 1- The Classic Bordeaux Experience
This is the day to discover Bordeaux for the first time.
You’ll move through the historic center step by step, with a mix of landmarks, food, and time to just wander.

Morning – Coffee and the First Walk
Start your day with a good coffee in the center. Bordeaux has become a really good coffee city over the last few years, so you won’t have trouble finding a nice spot.
Some reliable options are Books & Coffee or L’Alchimiste for coffee and cake, and Peter’s Coffee or Homies Kitchen if you feel like having a proper breakfast or brunch. If you want more ideas, I have a full list of coffee places here.
From there, head to Saint-André Cathedral, one of the most important landmarks in Bordeaux. It’s a massive Gothic building that has played a key role in the city’s history, including royal events. If you’re up for it, you can climb the Pey Berland Tower just next to it for one of the best views over the city.
Late Morning – Saint Paul and the Old Streets
From the cathedral, start walking towards the Saint Paul neighborhood.
Continue through streets like rue Saint-James and rue Saint-Colombe, one of the nicest areas to slow down a bit, with small shops, cafés, and a more local feel than the main squares.
There’s no real route to follow here, just walk and see where it takes you.
As you continue, you’ll reach the Grosse Cloche, one of Bordeaux’s oldest and most recognizable monuments. It used to be one of the gates of the medieval city and still has that fortress-like feel, with its two towers and the large bell hanging in the center.
Lunch – Marché des Capucins
For lunch, head to Marché des Capucins. This is Bordeaux’s main market, but more importantly, it’s where people actually come to eat. It’s a bit chaotic, a bit loud, and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.
If you want the classic experience, go to Chez Jean Mi, grab a table outside if you can, and order oysters with a glass of white wine. I still do this when I come here. It’s simple and very local.
If oysters aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other small restaurants and stands around the market.

Local tip: Try to arrive before 11:30 on weekends, otherwise it gets very crowded.
Afternoon – Historic Center and the River
After lunch, head back towards the historic center, this time towards the Saint Pierre neighborhood.
One of the first landmarks you shouldn’t miss here is Porte Cailhau, a beautiful 15th-century gate that once served as the main entrance to the city. It’s one of those places that really gives you a sense of Bordeaux’s medieval past, especially compared to the more classical parts you’ll see later.
From here, continue towards Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d’eau. This is probably the most famous view of Bordeaux, and the point where the city really opens up towards the river.

Evening – Apéro and Dinner
If the weather is nice, this is the moment to slow down a bit.
One of the best things to do in Bordeaux in the evening is to stop for an apéro, either by the river or on a terrace in the historic center. You don’t really need a specific place for this, just find a spot you like and sit down. Most places will serve decent wine, and the setting is what matters here.
For dinner, it’s worth choosing a place in advance. If you’re looking for something reliable, Bo-Tannique and Le Bouchon Bordelais are both excellent options for a proper meal. They focus on seasonal products and modern takes on French cuisine, and are a good introduction to the food scene in Bordeaux.

After dinner, if you still feel like it, you can always continue with a drink in one of the many bars in the center or along the river.
Day 2 – A Different Side of Bordeaux
This second day is less about landmarks and more about atmosphere.
You’ll see a different side of Bordeaux, with local neighborhoods, markets, and a more relaxed pace.
Morning – Walk to Chartrons
Start your day in the Chartrons neighborhood.
This used to be the district of wine merchants, and today it’s one of the most pleasant areas to walk around in Bordeaux. You’ll find small boutiques, antique shops, cafés, and streets lined with elegant buildings, especially around rue Notre-Dame. It feels quieter and more local than the historic center, which is exactly why it works so well for a second day.

If you want to start the day slowly, Chartrons also has a few nice coffee spots. Pure Pâtisserie and Accalmie Café, both on rue Notre-Dame, are good options.
From the city center, walk towards Chartrons along the river. On the way, don’t miss Place des Quinconces and the Monument aux Girondins, one of the largest squares in France. The monument was built in memory of the Girondins, a political group from Bordeaux who were executed during the French Revolution, and it’s hard to miss with its tall column and large fountains.
Late Morning – Market and the Quays
Continue towards the Chartrons market along the river.
If you’re here on a Sunday, this is a great place to stop. You can grab oysters, a glass of wine, or pick up a few things for a picnic and sit by the quay, which is what a lot of locals do.
The atmosphere here is much more relaxed than at Capucins, and the setting by the water makes it a really pleasant stop.
Midday – Picnic in the Park or Museum
If you picked up food at the market, a great option is to head to Jardin Public, Bordeaux’s central park. It’s a beautiful green space with large lawns, small bridges, and plenty of quiet corners. You’ll see families, groups of friends, and people just relaxing there, especially on sunny days. It’s one of the nicest places in the city to take a proper break.
If you prefer something cultural, you can also visit the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art, located just next to Chartrons.
It’s not a must if you only have a weekend, but the building itself is worth seeing. It’s set inside a former warehouse, with huge open spaces that give it a very different feel from traditional museums. It’s also a good option if the weather isn’t great.
Afternoon – Choose Your Pace
At this point, you can shape the rest of your day depending on what you feel like doing.
Option 1 – Bacalan, Wine and a Different Bordeaux
Head towards Bacalan, the old port area of Bordeaux.
This is where you’ll find the Cité du Vin, Bordeaux’s wine museum. It’s often described as a touristy place, but honestly, I’ve been there several times and still enjoy it. It’s very well done and gives a broader perspective on wine beyond just Bordeaux. Book your tickets.
If you decide to visit, plan at least a couple of hours.
Just next to it, you’ll find Halles de Bacalan, a modern covered market that’s perfect for a drink or a casual bite.
You can also continue to the Bassins des Lumières, an immersive art space set inside a former submarine base from World War II. The setting alone makes it worth a visit, and it’s worth booking your tickets in advance so you don’t queue.

How to get there: You can walk there from Chartrons or take tram B to the Cité du Vin.
Option 2 – The Right Bank and a More Local Atmosphere
For something completely different, cross the river to the Bastide district.
There are several ways to get there:
- tram A
- walking across Pont de Pierre
- Taking the Bat³ boat, which is part of the public transport system – leaves from the water mirror.
- or renting a city bike and doing the “bridge to bridge” ride, a really nice route along the river – see my article about this trail and how to rent bikes.
Once you’re there, head to Darwin, a former military site turned into a creative space with street art, cafés, and small shops.If you’re around later in the day (especially on weekends), continue to Chez Alriq, a guinguette by the river with live music and a very local atmosphere.
A nice option in between – Boat cruise
Another easy option, especially if you prefer something more relaxed, is to take a short boat cruise on the Garonne. Some of them include a glass of wine and depart from the city center, which makes it easy to fit right after your walk through Chartrons, with or without the market. It’s a simple way to see Bordeaux from a different angle without adding too much walking.

Evening – A Flexible Last Night
For your last evening, keep things simple.
You can head back to the center for dinner, or stay in Chartrons if you liked the atmosphere there. Both areas have plenty of good options, depending on what you feel like.

A great way to finish your weekend in Bordeaux is with a wine bar.A few of my favorites include YARRA if you’re staying in Chartrons, Le Bar à Vin in the center, or One More Wine in the Saint Paul district. Each has a slightly different vibe, but all are great for a relaxed final drink – here’s a list of some of my favorite wine bars.
If You Have More Than a Weekend in Bordeaux
If you can add a third day, it’s really worth leaving the city for a few hours. Bordeaux is surrounded by very different landscapes, and you can easily experience something completely different without going far.
Saint-Émilion is the easiest option if you want vineyards and a historic village. It’s a small medieval town surrounded by some of the most famous wine estates in the region, and you can get there by train in about 40 minutes.

Arcachon is perfect if you want the ocean. You can spend the day between the beach, the town itself, and the Dune du Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe. It’s a completely different atmosphere from Bordeaux and makes a great contrast for a short trip.

Final Thoughts on Spending a Weekend in Bordeaux
If this feels like a lot, don’t try to do everything. Bordeaux is a city that’s best enjoyed at a slower pace, especially in the evening when people head to the river, terraces fill up, and the whole atmosphere softens a bit.
Even with just a weekend, you’ll get a very good sense of what makes the city special. And if you find yourself wanting to come back, that’s usually a good sign you did it right.
