Bordeaux is often seen as a wine destination, so many people don’t think of it as a place to visit with young kids. But as a parent of three living in Bordeaux, I’ve spent years exploring the city with babies, toddlers, and older kids, and it’s actually much easier than it looks.

It’s a walkable city with parks, open spaces, and plenty of simple things kids love. You don’t need to overplan your days here. Some of the best moments are just letting them run around or taking a break in a park.

In this guide, I’ve gathered my favorite spots, activities, and practical tips to help you enjoy Bordeaux with babies and young kids.

Where to stay – if you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel, Maison Hubert in the Jardin public area is a great option.

What to Do in Bordeaux with Babies and Toddlers

Splash Time at the Miroir d’Eau 

There’s nothing kids love more in Bordeaux than the famous water mirror in front of Place de la Bourse. It may look like a monument, but it’s actually a very shallow pool where kids can run, splash, and cool off. It usually operates about 6 months a year, from around 10:00 to 22:00.

Tip: bring extra clothes. They will get wet.

A Perfect Family Break at Jardin Public 

Jardin Public is Bordeaux’s main park, located just a few minutes’ walk from the city center. It’s a beautiful park for everyone, but kids absolutely adore it.

Apart from plenty of space to run around, you’ll find two playgrounds, a carousel, a puppet theater, and even a small lake with boats. There’s also a kids’ library with a dedicated space for little ones to play. It’s one of those places where you can easily spend a few hours without planning much.

A Museum Actually Designed for Little Kids

Located inside the park, Muséum de Bordeaux – Sciences et Nature is one of the best museums to visit with younger children.

It has a large collection, but what really makes it stand out is the “Early Years Museum,” a space specifically designed for kids under 6. The exhibitions are interactive and regularly updated, which keeps them interesting even if you visit more than once.

It’s also free on the first Sunday of the month (except July and August) and included in the Bordeaux City Pass.

A Contemporary Art Space That Works with Kids 

The CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art of Bordeaux is not the first place you’d normally think of with small kids, but that has changed. They recently opened a dedicated kids’ space with creative and interactive installations, making it a surprisingly good stop with younger children. See more info here.

Darwin – a Relaxed Spot Where Parents Can Actually Sit

Darwin Ecosystem is one of my favorite places to visit with kids, especially when they’re little. At Magasin Général, there’s a corner with toys and books, which makes it easy to sit for coffee while they play. I used to meet friends here and spend hours without even noticing.

There’s also a great bakery on site, so it’s easy to grab something to eat without committing to a full restaurant.

Where: 87 Quai des Queyries / When: daily throughout the day

A Calm Indoor Option for Toddlers 

The children’s space at Bibliothèque Mériadeck is one of the best indoor options if you’re with toddlers. It’s designed as a quiet, welcoming space where little ones can explore, play, and read. Perfect when you need a slower moment during the day.

A Beach… Without Leaving the City

Most people think of the Atlantic coast when they think about beaches near Bordeaux, but you actually have one in the city. At Bordeaux Lac, you’ll find a small sandy beach that you can reach by tram C. Because it’s a lake, the water is much calmer, which makes it a great option with young kids.

An Indoor Play City Kids Love

Palomano Bordeaux is a fun indoor play space designed like a mini city for kids. It’s a great option with toddlers, especially on rainy days. Just keep in mind that it’s not huge and can get crowded, so it’s better to go early or around lunchtime.

A Simple Animal Experience Kids Really Enjoy

At Ferme Urbaine des Iris, kids can see and feed animals like rabbits, goats, and donkeys. It’s a simple experience, but that’s exactly why it works so well with younger kids. You can easily combine it with a walk in Parc de l’Ermitage nearby.

A Classic Half-Day Family Activity

Zoo de Bordeaux Pessac is a good option if you’re looking for a longer outing. You can see more than 250 animals, from monkeys to giraffes and white tigers, and they organize activities for kids throughout the year. See info here. 

Last but not least –  Dune du Pilat 

Even though it’s not in Bordeaux itself, Dune du Pilat is worth adding to your plan.

Kids absolutely love climbing the dune, but the real highlight is going down. Running, sliding, and rolling in the sand is usually the best part. You can easily turn it into a full beach day by combining it with the ocean nearby.

Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Bordeaux

Finding truly kid-friendly restaurants in Bordeaux is not always easy, especially with babies or toddlers. Most places aren’t designed for kids, so when you find one that works, it makes a big difference. Here are a few places I personally go back to:

Darwin – Magasin Général
Darwin Ecosystem is probably the easiest option with kids. It’s spacious, noisy enough that no one cares if your kids are loud, and there’s a small play corner with toys and books. When my kids were younger, I used to meet friends here and stay for hours without stress. 

ICIO Parrilla Popular
ICIO Parrilla Popular is one of the few proper restaurants that really thought about kids. They have a dedicated play area and even offer smaller versions of their dishes, which is rare in Bordeaux.
Where: 27 Pl. des Capucins/ When: Wed- Sun

Ibaïa Café
Ibaïa Café is more about location than anything else. It’s right on the riverfront, next to a playground, which makes it very practical. You can eat, then let the kids run around, or the other way around, depending on your mood.
Where: In front of 24 Quai des Chartrons,/ When: Open daily

Jabot’s
Jabot’s is a mix between a café, a small shop, and a family space. There’s a real play area with a slide, toys, and space for babies, which makes it one of the best spots with toddlers.

Where: 193 Rue Fondaudège/ When: Tuesday to Sunday

Practical Tips for Visiting Bordeaux with Kids

What It’s Really Like Traveling Here with Kids

This is something I always like to say clearly, so you know what to expect. France is not the most kid-friendly country when it comes to infrastructure. You won’t always find changing tables, and many restaurants don’t have kids’ menus.

Also, French kids are usually very calm in restaurants, which can feel a bit stressful if yours aren’t. I still struggle with that myself, which is why I often choose places that are more relaxed. It doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy your trip, far from it. It just means you need to plan a bit differently and know where to go.

Getting Around with Kids

Bordeaux is a flat and very walkable city. The historic center itself is mainly pedestrian, so it’s really easy to travel here with kids. 

However, if you need public transport, the tram in Bordeaux is easy to use and very convenient with kids. Children under 5 travel for free, and under 4 is usually free in many attractions as well.

The Toilets Situation (Very Important)

Let’s be honest, this is something you need to know. There are free public toilets around the city, but they’re not always in great condition. Still, they can be very useful when needed.

You’ll find free toilets in parks like Jardin Public and Parc Bordelais, along the riverfront, and inside places like malls, museums, libraries, and markets such as Marché des Capucins and Marché de Bacalan.

There are also paid toilets (€1) in central locations like Promenade Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Christoly and the Grands Hommes commercial centers. 

Where to Stay in Bordeaux with Kids

The Best Area to Base Yourself

If you’re visiting Bordeaux with kids, staying near Jardin Public is one of the best choices. It’s calm, still very central, and having the park nearby makes your days much easier. You always have a place to go if kids need a break.

Bordeaux might not look like a family destination at first, but once you experience it with kids, it really works.

It’s not about ticking off attractions. It’s about simple moments, parks, food stops, and letting the day flow a bit more slowly. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes it such a good place to visit with young kids.
