Festival Spiral 

Festival Spiral is a music festival hosted by some of the best music venues in Toulouse like Le Bikini and Le Metronum. The program includes tens of artists from all over the world that perform different events during the month of January.

The Violet Festival

Fête de la Violette takes place at Place du Capitole, the main square of Toulouse where the favorite Toulousian flower is celebrated in all its forms from decorations to food, perfumes, and more. 

This year (2023) the festival will take place on February 4-5. See more info here.

MAP – The Photography festival of Toulouse 

MAP is an amazing event for photography lovers in Toulouse. The festival takes place every year around May or June. Over several weeks places like Espace EDF Bazacle and Paul Dupuy Museum host amazing photography exhibitions. 

The goal of the festival is to introduce photography and its artists to the wide public and create opportunities for amateur and professional photographers to meet. Access to the exhibitions is free.

Photography festival in Toulosue - the best festivals in Toulosue

Rio Loco 

Rio Loco, created in 1995, is one of the best festivals Toulouse has to offer. The festival is focused on world music and culture and aims to promote cultural diversity. Each year, the program includes plenty of open-air concerts, shows for kids, visual arts, and more. 

The festival takes place at Prairie des Filtres in the Saint Cyprien neighborhood (read more about Saint Syprien in my district guide).

This year (2023) Rio Loco will take place on June 14-18. See more details here

Le Nouveau Printemps

Formerly known as le Printemps de Septembre, Le Nouveau Printemps is one of the best events in Toulouse. This cultural festival was created in 1991 to promote arts of different genres and disciplines, from cinema to architecture and dance. 

During the month-long festival, plenty of art events and exhibitions will be offered in the Saint Cyprien district in Toulouse. This year the festival will take place from June 2 to July 2, 2023. Follow this website to see the program of the festival.

Siestes Électroniques – Electro music

“Siestes Électroniques” is an electro music festival taking place every early summer in Toulouse. The event takes place at the beautiful gardens of Compans Caffarelli just north of the center of the city. The idea is to discover new music and artists in a very relaxed atmosphere, a sort of musical siesta in the park. 

The festival was created in 2002 in Toulouse and has been traveling to other cities in France and the rest of the world since.

Tangopostale – Tango Festival 

Tangopoltale is a big Tango festival taking place in different places in Toulouse every summer. The events include concerts, dance balls, exhibitions, and more. This year (2023) Tangopostale will take place from June 30 to July 29. See more details here.

Open-air Cinema at the Cinémathèque of Toulouse

This is a two-month event in which the Cinematheque of Toulouse invites you to experience cinema  “autrement” (differently).  During July and August,  more than 40 movies from different genres will be screened at the courtyard of La Cinematheque de Toulouse. With the long days and the hot weather in the summer, this is one of the highlights of the summer in Toulouse. 

The Cinematheque is located in a beautiful building on rue de Taur in the center of Toulouse. The program for this year will be published on their Facebook page.

Concerts sous les étoiles à Toulouse

This is a new music festival taking place at Jardin Raymond VI in Toulouse (the Saint Cyprien district). All the concerts will take place on the board of the Garonne River, under the stars, as the name of the festival suggests. This year (2023) the festival is taking place on July 1-13. Electro Alternativ

This is one of the biggest electronic music events in Toulouse, hosted by different music venues in the city. The lineup includes some of the biggest names in Electronic music. The festival usually takes place in September.

Piano aux Jacobins (Piano concerts)

Piano aux Jacobins is a Piano festival taking place every September at the Couvent de Jacobins in the center of Toulouse. Le Couvent de Jacobins is one of the landmarks of Toulouse and a must-stop on your visit there. This year (2023) the festival is taking place on September 6-29, see the program here.

Festival Toulouse les Orgues

Every year Toulouse is hosting the International Organ Festival. During the days of the festival, several churches in Toulouse are hosting daily Organ concerts. This year the event will be taking place on October 4-15.

Marché de Noël de Toulouse 

The main Christmas market of Toulouse takes place on Place du Capitole for about a month from the end of November until Christmas day! More than 100 wooden cabins with gifts, local products, and food adorn Place du Capitol and its impressive buildings. If you’re looking for Christmas gifts, you will find everything from jewelry, kids’ toys, cosmetics, chocolates, local wine, and more.

Big events and festivals around Toulouse (in Occitanie)

Jazz en Comminges

This Jazz festival is taking place every year in Saint Gaudens, a little town in the Haute Garonne department. This year the festival is celebrating its 20th edition. The event is taking place on May 17-23, see all the info here.

Arts Scenics

Arts Scenics is yet another fun summer festival taking place near Toulouse. The music festival is hosted by the town of Lisle-sur-Tarn, about an hour’s drive from Bordeaux, This year the festival will be taking place from June 30 to July 2. See the full program here

Pause Guitare

One of the biggest music festivals in Occitanie is taking place every July in Albi (about an hour drive from Toulouse). The festival, created more than two decades ago, annually hosts more than 90 artists on six stages around the city. The program cleverly combines performances by big stars and new artists. 

In 2023, the festival will take place on July 4-9.

Fabulous Festival

Fabulous is a gastronomy and electronic music festival, a pretty cool combination, don’t you think? The festival takes place every August in Villemur-sur-Tarn, a village located around 45 km from Toulouse. The event is hosted by the stunning Château de la Garrigue, which makes it even more special. 

This year (2023) the festival is taking place on August 16-18. See all the info here.

Festival de rue de Miremont 

Festival de rue de Miremont is a fun festival dedicated to street performance. Two days with a very entertaining program that includes circus, puppets shows, music concerts, equestrian aerobatics, and more. The festival takes place in Miremont, about 30k northwest of Toulouse. 
This year (2023) the festival is taking place on July 22-23, see all the details here.

Circa – A circus festival

Circa is an international contemporary circus festival taking place every year in Auch (about 1.5 hour’s drive from Toulouse). The shows in this festival are beyond traditional circus and include elements of dance, music, and digital arts. 

The festival usually takes place in October.

With the sunny weather outside, many of you will probably spend the weekend at a park, the beach or a terrace with oysters and cold white wine. But for those of you who love their weekends more active, there are plenty of things to do and you don’t want to miss them: big gardening events, the brocante of Quinconces, live painting on the M.U.R de Bordeaux and many more.

Brocante des Quinconces

The big brocante of Bordeaux is hosted twice a year at place des Quinconces with 200 antique dealers, horticulturists, restaurants and craftsmen. This spring is the 100th edition of the brocante and it will take place from April 20 to May 8.

Tauzia Fête les Jardins

 Tauzia is a gardening festival that takes place on April 20-22 at the Tauzia chateau in Gradignan.  The event, which received a great amount of interest from the Bordelaise public last year, is full of events and activities for gardening enthusiasts. It will bring together more than 80 exhibitors specialized in the world of plants: plant producers, landscape designers, artists, collections, horticulturists and in general people with an exceptional knowledge of plants. You will be able to buy plants, flowers and shrubs in the beautiful English park of Chateau Tauzia and also get advice from the specialists on how to maintain your garden.

Cannele d’adresses – Launch event

This Saturday (April 21) Cannele d’adresses, the free guide of Bordeaux, will launch its 9th edition in a big event that will take place at the Place Pey Berland. The program includes: concerts, social games for kids and adults, live art creation (live painting and creation of jewelry), catering facilities and more.

Urban Gardening in Parc aux Angéliques

An event of urban agriculture will take place this weekend (April 21-22) at Parc aux Angéliques ( in front of la guinguette chez alriq) which is located on the quai of la Bastide neighborhood. Come make your own seed bomb, seeds and barter plants , exchange information about gardening books and the shared gardens in your neighborhood. If you’re a city person but gardening is your thing, this is your moment to join the urban agriculture community of Bordeaux.

Discover Black Kites at the Bouscat forest

An interesting tour will take place on April 21 at the Bois du Bouscat that will introduce you to the world of black kites and other birds of prey like hawks, owls and buzzards. The event requires a reservation: 05 57 22 27 62.

Le M.U.R de Bordeaux

The work of Zarb, the street artist will be the one decorating the big graffiti wall, called le M.U.R de Bordeaux. You can meet him and see him perform his art on the wall on April 18-20.

Itinéraires des Photographes Voyageurs – photography festival

The 28th edition of the “travelling photographers routes” festival is taking place April 1-29. During this month, 17 photography expositions will be presented in the main cultural institutions of the city such as the Rocher de Palmer in Cenon, the Bibliothèque Grand Parc, Espace Saint-Rémi and others.

Street Color at Institut Bernard Magrez

An extensive street are exhibition will be presented from April 5 to June 24 at the Institut Bernard Magrez. The expo will include some well known street artists (mostly French ones), such as MAD C (GER), Seth (FRA), d’Alexöne (FRA) and more. This institute is a historic monument dated to the 18th century, so the combination of an ancient chateau with street art will most certainly add to the atmosphere of the exposition.

Planétarium in Cap Sciences

This is the last weekend (until  April 22) for the Planétarium in Cap Sciences, where your kids can discover and learn about the biggest mysteries of the universe. The planetarium will make a real time simulation of the night’s sky and will populate it with more than 3000 stars, planets and galaxies. The visit to the planetarium is limited to kids older than 8. For ages 3 to 5, they will offer storytelling sessions . It is recommended to reserve tickets online as the sessions for the planetarium are limited to groups of only 19 people.

Explore the behind the scenes of the Opera 

Le Vin & la Musique, accords et désaccords” is an exposition currently presented at the Cité du vin, that makes various fascinating connections between music and wine as they are reflected in different works of art. Until the end of spring break (April 22) the museum will hold a workshop for kids that will allow them to enjoy this exhibition as well. Kids (ages 8-12) will discover the magic world of the Opera through its costumes and decorations. At the end of the workshop they will create their own opera decorations.

Dining in the Dark

Tables Vatel restaurant invites you to a sensory experience of blind dining on April 21. This blind dinner will evoke all your other senses and intensify the taste and the odor.  The profits from the evening will go to the GIHP association  (Groupement d’Insertion des personnes Handicapées Physiques) and a few volunteers from the association will accompany you during the dinner.

Don’t let the rain get you down, spring is almost here and the Bordeaux area will soon start flourishing with interesting things to do.  Now all we need is the sun to come out so we can get our spring party started. Meanwhile, take a look at all the great events Bordeaux has to offer this month.

This is my list of things to do in April 2018 in Bordeaux and the surroundings. I didn’t want this list to be too long so I focused on the big events, however I do plan to publish updates so stay tuned.

Treasure Hunt on Pâques Weekend

The first weekend of April is the long weekend of Easter in France and the area of Bordeaux offers a great deal of activities to entertain you and your kids. Egg hunting, visits in beautiful chateaux and chocolate workshops are only some of the activities you could do this weekend. Festival Musical Écran

Festival Musical Écran is a very unique film festival all dedicated to documentaries about music. This year the program of the festival includes 20 films from four different countries. The festival will be held April 1-8 in different places in Bordeaux: Cinéma Utopia, Cour Malby, Bibliothéque Mériadeck, Institut Cervantes, Université de Bordeaux Campus Victoire.

Bicycle spring sale

Are you looking to buy or sell a bicycle, the big spring bicycle sale is just around the corner. Bordeaux bicycle stock exchange will take place  April 1 at Quai Louis XVIII. Those who wish to sell their bike can do it between 9:30 and 11am and the buyers will be able to start buying after 10am.

Esclave du livre (literature festival)

Esclave du livre  is a literature association whose goal is to promote reading and to support the creation of new literature. April 6-8 they will hold a literature festival that will bring together authors and illustrators for debates, public readings, performances and uncovering of pieces that haven’t been published yet.

Convention Tattoo Bordeaux 

The international tattoo convention of Bordeaux will take place on the weekend of April 14-15 in Hangar 14, which is located at Quai des Chartrons.  The program includes: tattoo contest, expositions, live concerts and different activities such as jungling and brakedancing.

Digital Abysses at Base Sous-Marine 

If you still didn’t have a chance to visit the incredible Base sous- Marine, it’s time to do it. The first exhibition, Digital Abysses, ( 9 March to 20 May 2018 ) is by the digital artist Miguel Chevalier, which explores nature through underwater plants and wildlife. The characteristics of this unique place with the combination of fixed works and interactive digital installations makes it a special experience.

Street Color at Institut Bernard Margez

Luminopolis at Cap Sciences

The Luminopolis  exposition of Cap Sciences has been running from June 2017 and if you haven’t had the chance to go there yet, it’s time to do it now before the museum gets crowded with a lot of tourists. Luminopolis is a light exposition that have been structured as an Escape game where you need to answer questions about light in order to get out.
The expositions runs from June 2017 to September 2017 ,the ticket price is 8 euros and the minimum age is 6.

Lisa Stansfield

The famous British 90s start, Lisa Stansfield will perform at Theatre Femina on April 28 at 20:00.

Virginia Rodrigues in Cenon

Virginia Rodrigues, the Brazilian singer with the amazing voice will give one concert at Le Rocher de Palmer in Cenon in April 6.

Imagine Dragons

The american rock band, Imagine Dragons, will stop by the Bordeaux Métropole Arena  on April 4 as part of their world tour.

Portes Ouvertes

Open doors in Médoc 

To celebrate the beginning of the spring the Maison du Tourisme et du Vin de Pauillac will hold an open doors weekend where you’ll be able to visit all chateaux of the Medoc region and do a lot of wine tasting. The event will take place April 7-8.

Open doors in Saint-Emilion

An open door weekend will take place on April 29 to May 1 at Saint Emilion where 84 chateaux will hold open door events and will propose different activities to the visitors. Some châteaux (such as Château Fleur Cardinale) will start the open door weekend April 28.
