This weekend we can finally see Bordeaux coming back to life after the Christmas vacation. During the winter, as it’s quite freezing outside, most of the events tend to be smaller than the events and festival starting at the end of May. But it doesn’t mean that we have nothing to do until spring arrives. There are plenty of fun small events, a lot of art and nice shows for kids. As those are indoor events, many of them require making a reservation, so be aware of that! Here’s the list of things to do in and around Bordeaux this weekend (January 11-13).

Winter Sales

Winter sales have finally started, so if you were waiting to buy new shoes, this is a good time to hit the stores. Les soldes d’hiver will take place during six weeks between January 9 and February 19.

Hors Piste – ski in the city

Hors Piste is a cool winter event in Darwin where they transform one of the Hangars into a ski station with fun free activities. The event will take place this Saturday (January 12). For more details and the full program click here.

Le Cirque Arlette Gruss

Arlette Gruss is a traditional French circus, founded in 1985. The circus has performed in Bordeaux several times in the last two decades and this time it’s coming back with a new show. This year they offer a free, guided visit to the circus village to those who bought a full priced ticket to the show. The circus tent will occupy place de Quinconces from January 10 to February 6. Disney on ice

For the first time in Bordeaux all the popular Disney characters reunite for an ice skating spectacle. Disney sur Glace includes three shows during this weekend (January 11-13).  For tickets and more details click here.

A creative workshop at the Kaléidoscope exhibition

Last week in my article about 4 exhibitions you should see, I mentioned the beautiful Kaleidoscope exhibition at the Institut Bernard Magrez. This weekend I have some exciting news. The museum is hosting a creative workshop around the works of YZ, whose works are all about humanity and representing women from different cultures. After a presentation of her works, the host will guide you to make your portrait of a woman on rice paper. The workshop is open to kids older than 5 years old. The workshop will take place this Saturday (January 12). For more details click here.

No Land Demain- dance show

No Land Demain is a dance show, by the talented choreograph, Faizal Zeghoudi, that tells the story of immigration during crisis times like wars. The show will be presented this Friday (January 11) at the Casino Théâtre Barrière de Bordeaux. For more details and tickets click here.

Histoire de la danse espagnole

We’re used to thinking of Flamenco as the representative Spanish dance. However, Flamenco is only one of the many genres in the rich Spanish dance world. Ballet de Laredo invites you to discover the history of the Spanish dance with twenty beautiful dancers. The show will take place this Sunday (January 13) at the Rocher de Palmer in Cenon. Festival du film Turc de Bordeaux

Inédit – Photography exhibition

Arrêt sur l’Image Galerie and the Labolabo workshop invites you to an exhibition of four photographers, presenting their work in the new expo called Inedit: Jean-Luc Chapin / Gabrielle Duplantier / Christophe Goussard / Valérie Six. This exhibition is an opportunity to discover the expertise of the workshop Labolabo in black and white prints. The exhibition will take place From January 10 to February 2. The exhibition is free. Trois Maitres – Exhibition

Robert Houdusse, Maurice-Elie Sarthou and Jean Sauboa are three painting teachers at the lycée Montaigne and Montesquieu de Bordeaux. From January 10 to March 10 their works will be presented at Château Lescombes in Eysines. It will be interesting to see the difference in styles and inspirations of the works of the three teachers who have influenced several generations of future Bordeaux artists.  For more details click here.

My weekend lists are usually a bit longer than that, but as I said Bordeaux is slowly getting back to its rhythm of events and it will get busier starting next week. This week It took me some time to find good events but after many hours of searching and selecting I’m pretty happy with this list.

Just to let you know that I’m working on a list of the biggest events in January and February so you could plan your schedule ahead.

This time my weekend list includes plenty of local creator markets, so if you want to discover local talent and support young creators this is a good opportunity. For those of you who are fed up with markets I have other suggestions such as an animation festival, an opening of a new covered market, a street art festival and more.

The opening of les Halles de Talence

The new covered market in Talence is about to open its doors this Friday (December 7) with a three days inauguration party. During the weekend you’ll meet the new merchants, listen to music and vote for the last stand that remains to be occupied. You can see more details and the list of stands to chose from here.

International Animation Films Festival

Les Nuits Magiques is an annual international festival of animation movies taking place at “Le Festival” cinema in Begles from November 28 to December 9. This is the 28th edition of the festival, which over the years gained a reputation in the animation and special effects world. The rich program includes plenty of events and activities for  both kids and adults: premiers of new movies, workshops, meetings with film creators and more. Palmer Street’Art

This is a super cool art event where you can learn to create art in different styles from the artists themselves. The street art festival will take place this Saturday (December 8) at Rocher de Palmer in Cenon. The program includes eight artists from different genres proposing workshops such as graffiti, dj, video art, design and more. Bordeaux en livres

For its third edition, Bordeaux en Livres invites young and old bookworms, aspiring cartoonists and writers to discover the mysterious world of literature and comics. The program includes conferences with writers, comedy shows, photography exhibition, a drawing contest and more. There will be a big space dedicated to young story lovers with storytelling sessions for the little ones and a history workshop for older kids. The event will take place this Saturday (December 8) at the Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux. The event is free, see the full program here and all the practical info here.

The International dance en film festival

The international Danse en film festival is a meeting point of two artistic expressions, cinema and dance, which together create a very magical experience. The festival is taking place this week (until December 8) at the Utopia Cinema and some other venues in the center of Bordeaux. See the full program and all the details on the site of the festival.

Cirque Pardi! is Coming Back

Cirque Pardi! is a modern circus whose shows combine a lot of dance and humor and are very entertaining for both kids and adults. This year they are coming back to Bordeaux for the second time with their show BorderLand, which gained a great success on their last visit here in 2015.  Cirque Pardi! will perform 15 shows from November 30 to December 22. The temporary circus will be located on Quai de queyries, just next to Darwin. Last chance to buy antiques at the Brocante des Quinconces

This is the last weekend of the brocante of Bordeaux taking place at place des Quinconces. The big brocante includes more than 200 antique dealers, horticulturists, restaurants and craftsmen.  For more info and the list of exhibitors check out the website of the event.

Buy clothes at the Grande Braderie

Le Relais Gironde will hold a clearance sale this Saturday (December 8) where you can buy clothes, shoes, bags and more. This event is quite big and you can find many interesting and useful items for cheap. For more details click here.

FOR KIDS

Make you Christmas decorations in a FabLab

Want your kids to make their own Christmas decorations? Cap Sciences invites your family to a DIY workshop, where you can make your decoration using the equipment in their Fablab. The workshop is open to kids older than 12 years old and requires pre-registration – book your visit here. The event, taking place this Saturday (December 8) will also include a tour in Cap Sciences. Opening of a temporary ice skating rink in Bègles

Centre Commercial Rives d’Arcins in Bègles will open this weekend a temporary ice skating rink for the Christmas season. To celebrate the opening they invite you to skate with the players of Les Boxers de Bordeaux (Bordeaux’s ice hockey team). The event will take place Saturday (December 8) at 15:00. Festival Made in Bordeaux

The idea behind Festival Made in Bordeaux is to promote local artists and creators. The event will take place this weekend (December 7-9) in Château des Tours in Le Bouscat. Pop-up de Noël des Polichineuses

After two very successful events of “Les Rendez-vous des Polichineuses” in les Halles de Bacalan, that took place this year, they are coming back with a special Christmas pop-up market. The idea is to reduce consumption and to favor second hand and vintage items. The organizers of the event did a great job in choosing stylish accessories, furniture and home decor so you are guaranteed to find a lot of chic Christmas gifts. There’ll be also a dedicated place for kids so it’s really a family friendly event. Marché de Noël de Bordeaux

The traditional Christmas market of Bordeaux will open its gates between November 30 and December 30. This is one of the biggest Christmas markets in the region with 150 pavilions selling all the traditional Christmas merchandise such as clothes, decorations, jewelry, toys and local products. Even if you don’t intend to buy any gifts at the market you can still enjoy the Christmas spirit with some hot wine and roasted chestnuts.  For more info click here.

Marché des Créateurs Récycleurs

This event is both creative an environmentally friendly. The market of recycling creators gather 22 craftsmen that make their products from used materials. You will find stands of furniture, jewelry, sculptures, accessories and more. The event will take place this weekend (December 8-9) in ATELIER d’éco SOLIDAIRE. Etsy Made in France Bordeaux

This market is organized by the Etsy Made in France team with the goal to promote local independent creators. Le Marché de Noël Solidaire 

The Solidarity Christmas market is part of the Social Economy and Solidarity month. This is a unique market, organized by the city hall and the local social development fund aiming to support young local creators who founded their company thanks to microcredits. L’Arche de Noël – creators market

L’Arche de Noël is a creators market taking place in the Chartrons neighborhood every weekend until Christmas (December 22-23 is the last event). Each week a group of local talented craftsmen and artists will present their original creations.

Marché de Noël à Sarlat

If you’re in the mood to travel a bit this weekend, why not go to one of the best Christmas markets in South of France, the Sarlat Christmas martket. Sarlat is a magical places that is worth a visit any time of the year, but this market makes it even more worthwhile. The Christmas village opened its doors on December 5 and will continue until the end of December. The village includes 70 chalets selling local products, clothes, decorations, hot wine and more. This weekend Bordeaux hosts the big foodies festival, S.O. good. It’s also a good weekend to be heading to Bassin d’Archachon where two interesting festivals are about to take place: the Geek festival and the Gees Festival (they kind of sound the same, now that I think of it :)). Darwin is always a perfect solution for the weekend and this time they are hosting an organic wine market. Other events this weekend include a piano festival, Cirque du Soleil shows, a literature festival, concerts, exhibitions and more. The list is long so let’s get started on things to do this weekend in Bordeaux (November 16-18):

S.O. Good Festival

This is one of the biggest events to take place during fall in Bordeaux. The S.O Good festival is a gastronomic happening that aims to highlight the talent found in the Nouvelle Aquitaine gastronomic scene and to celebrate local products. The event will take place at Hangar 14 (Quai des Chartrons) on November 16-18. The festival’s program includes more than 100 local producers hosted by the Hangar, many chef workshops in the city center, a night feast on Saturday and a farmers’ brunch on Sunday. This festival is not exclusively French, the opening event in Palais de la Bourse will be dedicated to Italian cuisine. This is one of the most important culinary events in the region and many Michelin star chefs are taking part in it. The price of the festival pass is 12€ and 10€ on pre-sale. Organic Wine Market in Darwin 

Les Barriquades is the biggest market of bio wines in the region, an event that will take place this weekend (November 17-18) in Darwin. On the menu, a huge selection of organic wines  from Bordeaux, Saint Emilion, Bergerac, Jurançon and other regions in France such as Alsace, Fitou, Minervois and more. The entry is free. Piano Festival

The 9th edition of the Festival L’esprit du Piano is currently taking place at the Auditorium of the Opera of Bordeaux (until November  26). This magnificent festival hosts some important pianists like Chick Corea, Yefim Bronfman, Deszo Ranki and Bertrand Chamayou and others, some of whom will collaborate with the National Orchestra of Bordeaux and the choir of the Opera of Bordeaux. One of the biggest names to take the stage of the Auditorium is the Jazz legend, Abdullah Ibrahim. See the program of the festival here and info about tickets here.

Cirque du Soleil 

The magnificent Cirque du Soleil are coming to Bordeaux with the show, Ovo, a tale about insects with original music and beautiful new costumes. The circus will give six shows on November 14-18 at the Arkea Arena in Floriac. For tickets click here and for more info about the show look here.

Bassin Geek Festival

If you enjoyed the Bordeaux Geek Festival a few months ago, it’s time for the winter edition with the Bassin Geek Festival. The program includes all the things the geek community loves:  comics, sci-fi, web culture, video games, parallel worlds, creative industries and more. The festival will take place at the Parc des Expositions de La Teste De Buch on November 17-18. Check out the full program and all the details here  and ticket prices here.

Burdigame Games Festival 

Come share your passion for games at the annual Burdigame Games Festival taking place this weekend (November 17-18) in Lormont. Cooperative , construction, board and outdoor games, this festival has it all. It’s a chance for you to discover new games and to get nostalgic with old childhood games. Lettres du monde

The literature festival, Lettres du monde, will take place on November 16-25 with lectures and debates in different venues across Bordeaux Metropole. Events will take place in libraries, schools, book stores, cinemas and more.
You can enjoy this festival even if you don’t speak French as most of the writers participating in the lectures are coming from around the world, from Yemen to Syria, Spain and Haiti. For the full program click here and for more details here.

Bordeaux Cata Raid 2018

The 6th edition of the the Catamaran race will take place this weekend (November 16-18) in the Garonne river, just next to the central quais. This beautiful event, organized by the les Marins de la Lune club include tens of crew members that will pass next to the quai to honor the city. The view is guaranteed to be spectacular. Geese Festival

Every winter more than 50,000 gees find refuge in the Arcachon area. The gees festival (Festival de la Bernache), taking place on November 17- 25, gives you a unique opportunity to discover this species in a festive atmosphere.  In the program: boat trips, guided tours, conferences, concerts, workshops on comics creation, photo exhibition and more. The activities of the festival will be held in different places on the Bassin, among them: Gujan-Mestras, Andernos-les-Bains, Arès, Lanton, Arcachon, La Teste-de-Buch and more. L’Arche de Noël – creators market

L’Arche de Noël is a creators market taking place in the Chartrons neighborhood every weekend until Christmas (December 22-23 is the last event). Kids books and comics festival 

The annual kids books and comics festival will take place this Saturday (November 18) at the Halles de Gascogne in Leognan. More than 3000 books will be presented at the event which  also includes spectacles, activities for kids, games and more. Many authors and editors will take part in the event and will sign books. Arrested Development at the Rocher de Palmer

Kaléidoscope – Street art exhibition

One of my favorite art venues in Bordeaux, l’Institut Culturel Bernard Magrez, is about to open a new art exhibition this month. The Kaléidoscope exhibition is all about feminine art, hosting nine female street artists to present their works in a genre that is usually considered more masculine. Exposition 3/1 – Espace Saint-Rémi

La Spirale association invites you to a collective exhibition by three local artists: Magalie Darsouze (visual artist), Benjamin Monteil (engraver) and Chris Pillot (painter). The Chateaux of Sauternes et Barsac will open their doors to the public this weekend so if you love sweet wine this weekend is a treat. If you prefer to stay in town there are plenty of other things to do like a yoga festival in Darwin, a craftsmen market in Chartrons, a piano festival, a World music festival and more.

Open doors in the Chateaux of Sauternes et Barsac

Sauternes et Barsac are two wine areas (appellation d’origine contrôlée) famous for their sweet white wine. This weekend (November 10-11) 50 wine producers of Sauternes et Barsac invite you to an open door weekend, with a program that will include wine tastings, visits in the châteaux, gourmet food, concerts and activities for kids. BLISS YOGA Festival

The Bliss Yoga festival will take place this weekend (November 10-11) in Darwin. The program of the festival includes 30 courses that aim to make you discover different types of yoga no matter what level you are. Although yoga is the main event, there will be other activities like workshops, different information stands, a well being space, kids area, a photography exhibition, bio products and more. Halles de Bacalan – 1 year anniversary 

Halles de Bacalan invites you to celebrate their first anniversary with a super gourmand event on the weekend of November 9-11. Piano Festival

Centenaire de l’armistice de la 1ère Guerre Mondiale – Exhibition

This year is the centenary of the armistice of the First World War and as part of the commemoration the city will present an exhibition of different objects, posters and archives related to the war. The exhibition will be presented at the Town Hall in Floriac between November 6 and November 17 and in Espace Lucie Aubrac on November 11. For more info click here.

Jazz Festival in Caudéran

The second edition of the Jazz festival of Caudéran will take place on November 8-10. Salon Ob’Art

Le salon Ob’Art (Objets de créateur) is a creators fair with a rich pedagogic program of activities, workshops and demonstrations. The aim of the event is to create a dialog between artists, craftsmen and the wide public in order to transfer their know-how and to make the young generation discover a variety of professional vocations. The event will be dedicated to Japanese philosophy and craftsmanship. Le Salon Ob’Art will take place in Hangar 14 (Quai des Chartrons) on November 9-11. L’Arche de Noël – creators market

L’Arche de Noël is a creators market that will take place in the Chartrons neighborhood every weekend until Christmas (November 22-23 is the last event). Each week a group of local talented craftsmen and artists will present their original creations. This weekend (November 10-11) the stands will include jewelry, kids toys, textile, graphic design and more.

Festival Toutes Latitudes

Festival Toutes Latitudes is taking place this week (November 7-11) in Rocher de Palmer in Cenon. The festival celebrate diversity through world music with musicians from all the the world. The lineup includes the Malian singer Oumou Sangaré (the black Tina Turner), the Turkish guitarist Bilal Karaman, the Algerian band Babylone and more. Salon des Grandes Ecoles

The Salon of  the “Grandes Ecoles” is an event where the most prestigious institutions in the French higher education come to present their schools to future students. The Salon will take place this Saturday (November 10) at the Palais des Congrès. Bordeaux Medoc Lyrique comtest

The finals of the International singing competition of the Opera of Bordeaux will take place this weekend (November 9-10) at the Opera. Some of the young singers are coming from the biggest opera houses and theaters in France and abroad such as Opéra de Zurich, Opéra National de Bordeaux, Opéra national de Paris, Semperoper Dresde, Théâtre du Bolchoï and Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse. Exposition 3/1 – Espace Saint-Rémi

La Spirale association invites you to a collective exhibition by three local artists: Magalie Darsouze (visual artist), Benjamin Monteil (engraver) and Chris Pillot (painter). Douro, l’air de la terre au bord des eaux – Exhibition

La Cité du Vin is currently hosting its second temporary exhibition of the “Vignoble invité” (invited vineyard). This exhibition, called Douro, l’air de la terre au bord des eaux, will take you to the heart of the wine region Haut-Douro in Portugal. As with the permanent exhibition in La Cité du Vin this too will be  accompanied by an experience of sounds and senses.  For more info click here.

Salva Me exhibition

The program of October proves that the Bordelaise summer is officially over. Outdoor music concerts and food truck festivals were replaced with new exhibitions, indoor events scattered across the city and some interesting outdoor activities such as a color run and an agricultural march. And yet again we see how Bordeaux can offer activities come rain or shine 🙂
From an art festival to space month and balloon flights, this is the list of the best things to do in and around Bordeaux in October 2018:

FAB – International art festival

FAB is the annual International art festival of Bordeaux Metropole taking place this year on October 5-24. As one of Europe’s biggest art festivals it attracts some known names from the international contemporary art scene. During the three weeks of the festival more than 30 shows will take place in more than 20 different locations in Bordeaux, from the TnBA theater to the Opera of Bordeaux and the Base Sous Marine. Space month 

The city of Mérignac will host a whole month of space discovery with workshops, exhibitions, conferences, parties and more. Here’s a sneak peek at the rich program of October:

La Grande Transhumance Urbaine

Don’t be surprised if on the weekend of October 5-7 you’ll suddenly see plenty of sheep crossing your street, that’s the  Grande Transhumance Urbaine. The idea behind this three days even is to connect city people to agriculture. Seven breeders and their sheeps will lead the march, that will start in Blanquefort, continue through the center of Bordeaux and finish in Villenave d’Ornon. People are welcome to participate in this 33km march or parts of it. Based on the success this event has had in the last few years, more than 1500 are expected to follow the breeders.  You can still enjoy the festival even if you don’t want to make the walk, just attend the events in every town that’s on the way. Tauzia Fête les Jardins

Tauzia fête les Jardins is one of the most beautiful plant celebration in the south of France. The fifth edition of this fantastic event in Gradignan will take place on October 5-7. A three day event that gathers plants growers, professional gardeners, landscape architects and artists. The rich program of the festival includes plenty of workshops, conferences, activities for kids such as painting and music in the garden, creating a bamboo palisade, creating a herbarium, plastic arts in the garden for kids and more. Color obstacle rush

The color obstacle rush is a feast of music, color and sports. Live DJs, a fun warm-up, a 5-km course consisting of 5 color stations, 20 music zones, and 20 new obstacles including giant slides, bouncy castles, tunnels, foam, kangaroo balloons – just to name a few! Les Campulsations

Les Campulsations is a students festival, celebrating the beginning of the new academic year in different locations in the Aquitaine region: Bordeaux, Talence, Pessac, Gradignan, Bayonne, Biarritz, Périgueux, Agen and Pau. In Bordeaux Metropole the events will take place in many different locations from university campuses to museums and theaters. The program is very varied and includes such events as a brocante party, music concerts, theater shows, exhibitions and more- check out the full program and find an event near you. The festival will take place from September 27 to October 6.

Festival Gospel En Cathedrale

FIFIB- Bordeaux international festival of independent movies

Bordeaux Independent Films Festival will take place on October 9-15 at Rue Malby in the center of Bordeaux. The program of the festival includes films screening, concerts and meeting with special guests. Every evening, the festival village will transform into an open cinema theater and a dance floor. Foire aux Plaisirs

This is the spring edition of the traditional Bordelais Fair that is taking place at Place des Quinconces  from October 12 to November 4. It’s a perfect activity for kids and for those who are young in spirit as La Foire aux Plaisirs de Bordeaux has it all: big wheel, roller coasters, ghost trains, bumper cars, donuts, crèpes, barbes à papa and more. The fair is open daily from 14:00, you are not required to pay any entry fee, only for some of the attractions. See more info about the fair here.

Speen Festival

The Speen festival is a performance art festival mixing dance music and theater. Throughout the weekend of the festival (October 13-14) many performances will take place on  Place de la Comédie and Cours du châpeau rouge, among them: a Brazilian music concert, dance performances, a jazz concert, improvisation theater and more. Lire en Poche – books festival 

Lire en Poche is a pocket books festival that will take place in Gradignan in October 12-13. Besides a huge books sale, a wide range of activities are offered to the participants, among them: reading sessions, theater shows, music, games, workshops for kids and more. The entrance to the festival is free, however some activities are paid and/or require prior reservation, which will start on October 6 at 8:00 – click here to register.  For more info click here.

Salon ABC Kidz

A big event dedicated to future parents and young families will take place on October 13-14 in Hangar 14. Salon ABC kids is the annual gathering of all the important companies and organizations related to babies and little kids from clothing to room decoration, toys and different services like child care companies and health providers. The event allows young parents to meet all the relevant products and services in one place. Many activities will take place at the Salon to make it more entertaining, among them a massage space, workshops for kids, soft play for toddlers and more. For tickets and more info click here.

Nuit des Bibliothèques

Have you ever visited some of Bordeaux libraries? If you think of it as only a place storing books, think again, as the libraries in this city are much more than that. Throughout the year they propose plenty of events, courses and activities for kids. Nuit des Bibliothèques will take place on October 13, and is your opportunity to discover the libraries across the city. 25 libraries in 20 different towns in Bordeaux Metropole will participate in this event and will offer such activities as concerts, theater shows, science workshops, games for kids and more. Montgolfiades de Saint-Emilion

Montgolfiades is an annual festival of balloon flights organized by Le Ciel est à Toi association. The flights will take place October 19-21 above Saint Emilion and the vineyards around it, so the sight is promised to be breathtaking. For more info click here.

Bordeaux Swing Festival

The international festival of Lindy hop (part of the Swing family) will take place on October 19-21 in the Bordeaux region and this year they have invited a special guest, one of biggest stars in the the New York swing scene- Gordon Webster. Two swing parties will take place at the beautiful le Rocher de Palmer in Cenon, with a battle between the Gordon Webster Hot Swing Sextet bands. Fête du Vin nouveau & de la brocante

On the last weekend of this month (October 27-28) the Chartrons neighborhood invites you to celebrate the Autumn with a festival of new wine and a brocante. During these two days, the main street, rue Notre-Dame , will be transformed into a brocante with wine stands and roasted chestnuts. Come and spend a festive weekend on one of the most interesting streets in Bordeaux.

First exhibition at the Musee de la Mer et de la Marine

La Musee de la Mer et de la Marine is finally about to present its first exhibition, just a few months after the cancellation of the Monet exhibition. Although the museum itself is not due to open soon, it has decided to open an exposition room where a new photography expo will be presented between October 1st and April 30, 2019. The “Sous les mers, au-delà de l’image” exhibition consists of more than 100 photographs by Paul Nicklen and David Doubilet, two National Géographic  photographers. New exhibition at the Base Sous Marine- Medio Acqua

It is no secret that the Base sous marine is one of my favorite places in Bordeaux so the fact that they’re about to open a new exhibition is making me very happy. The Medio Acqua exhibition will include installations by major French and intentional artists as well as a selection of video works by young emerging artists, recently graduated from the prestigious Fresnoy School. The main theme of the exhibition will be inspired by the world of water, while the location and the structure of the base sous marine plays an important role in it.

Although it’s officially Autumn, the weather in Bordeaux still feels like we’re in the middle of July and that gives us a chance to continue enjoying the outdoor events this city has to offer. Hopefully we won’t have pay for that with a long and cold winter. So what is waiting for us this weekend? A Visual Arts festival, Latin Music in Cenon, A sports day in Hostens, a magic festival in Eysines, and plenty of outdoor free concerts all over the city.

Echo a Venir –  an electronic music festival 

A big visual art and electronic music festival will take place this weekend in Bordeaux (September 20-23). For its 7th edition the festival invited artists from Montreal to unveil their  immersive  360°  projections on the pavilions created especially for the event. Les Talençaises

This weekend (Sep 21-22), Peixotto park in Talence is getting festive for the annual event of Les Talençaises. In the program: dj sets, concerts, interactive dance, a lot of food and a beautiful park to spend a fun afternoon with friends and family. The event is free, for more info click here.

Latin Music Festival 

Corazon Latino, a Latin Music and dance festival will take place this weekend (September 21-23) in Rocher de Palmer in Cenon. The Program  includes music concerts, dance shows, three Latin parties andinternational dancers that came especially to teach you some moves. Festival Arts Mêlés

This is the 10 year anniversary of Arts Mêlés, a festival of magic and supernatural experiences that is organized by the town of Eysines. As always the program is full of magic shows, illusionists, acrobats and more (making it also fun for kids). Cypher Party

The Move It organization will host a party this Saturday (September 22) right in the heart of the historic center of Bordeaux, Promenade Sainte-Catherine. This varied program will make you stay in the city center the whole afternoon: A dj set (15:00 to 16:00), dance battle (16:00 to 18:30) dance shows, live music and more. The Pavillon d’été of L’Orangeade

It’s almost the end of the Bordelaise summer and it’s the last opportunity to enjoy the summer pavilion on le Quai Deschamps on the right bank of the Garonne. Journée Sports Nature

This Sunday (September 23) Hostens, the beautiful town and lake in the Parc Naturel Regional de Gascogne, will host its annual sports day. This event is all about spending time with your family while discovering outdoor fun sportive activities. A big second hand clothes sale

After many successful huge vintage clothing sales in Paris, Violette Sauvage arrives to Bordeaux with the same agenda of giving clothes a second life. Jazz weekend at the Caillou

If you’re looking for a Jazz concert for the weekend, Le Caillou in the Jardin Botanique is the place for you. This weekend the program includes the Christophe Maroye trio on Friday (Sep 21) and the Kyara Lisa trio on Saturday (Sep 22).

Exhibition at the Institut Bernard Magrez

l’Institut Culturel Bernard Magrez is one of the cultural gems of Bordeaux, surprising us with new and inspiring exhibitions every few months. This time they host the painter Guillaume Toumanian, with an exhibition of 20 paintings called “De la lumière”.  The expo will be presented at Château Labottière until October 28. Snow White at the Grand Theatre

The Ballet of Angelin Preljocaj comes back to Bordeaux with Blanche-Neige (Snow white) created in 2008. It’s not only the  brilliant choreography that makes this pieces of art so special but also the costumes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier and the stage decoration by Thierry Leproust. Seven shows of the Ballet will take place at the Opera of Bordeaux between September 21 and September 30. For tickets and more info check out the website of the Opera.

Relache Festival

Relache Festival, created by the Allez les filles association, is a series of free concerts that are going to take place at different places and dates during this summer. The 9th edition of this festival will last about 3 months (May 30 to August 31) with performances by both local groups and international acts in many genres of music. The next evening will take place this Friday (July 6) at Bergonie in the Saint Genès neighborhood. Take a look at the full program of events on their website.

Inauguration of the new park in forêt du Bourgailh

This Saturday (July 7)  a new park will be inaugurated in the Forêt du Bourgailh in Pessac. The park includes many facilities such as a fitness area, an open- air theater, a skate park, wall climbing and more. Several events and activities will take place during the day, among them a guided tour that will start at the kids’ new playground and will finish at the zoo of Pessac. Two music concerts will take place starting 18:00 with the bands Royals (pop-rock) and Bazars et bémols (classic jazz). See more details on the site of the town of Pessac.

Senefesti

Senefesti is a festival celebrating African culture through dance and music performances. The next two events of the festival will take place at the Rocher de Palmer in Cenon. On Saturday (July 6) a new photography exhibition will be presented and on Sunday (July 7) an African music festival will take place from 14:00 to 2:00. For more details check out here.

Zinefest

Zinefest is a festival dedicated to comics, illustrations, photography and poetry. The festival includes several expositions and concerts by both French and international artists and will take place in several venues in south Bordeaux. Puppets Theater for Kids

Le Guignol Guérin, founded in 1853, is the oldest puppetry in France which holds daily spectacles for kids in Parc Bordelais during the summer  (July and August). The shows usually starts at 16:00 but can be cancelled or postponed when it’s raining or getting too hot. Read more about the theater here.

Learn how to Tango

Like every summer the Tango Bordeaux association organizes pubic tango events in Jardin Public,  Place de Quinconces and la Grande Poste. The next evening will take place this Friday (July 6) at Place de Quinconces. Jalles House Rock

Le Jalles House Rock is one of the biggest rock festivals in Gironde that annually proposes a rich program of local and international acts. The goal of the festival is to share the love for rock music with as many people as possible and that’s why the entrance is free (they do however encourage you to donate to the Estran association that organizes the event). The 11th edition of the festival in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles will take place on July 5-7 and includes bands like Circa Waves, Dewolff, Burning Heads and Himalayas.

Festival Rues et Vous

This is the 12th edition of Festival Rue et Vous , a performance art festival that takes place every year in the charming medieval town of Rions. This year the festival was expanded to three days (July 6-8) and will include a rich program of theater, dance, circus and music shows for both adults and kids. Sous les Oliviers à Langon

Sous les Oliviers is a series of events organized by the city of Langon and the cultural center Carmes taking place over six evenings in July. The first event takes place this Friday (July 6) and will be dedicated to French songs. See the full program for the summer here.

Sentout Festival

Every summer the Sentout festival creates three magical evenings where you get to enjoy the worlds of music, wine and gastronomy combined. The festival will take place on July 5-7 in the little village of Lignan de Bordeaux which is located at the entrance to  the Entre deux Mers area (the wine region of Bordeaux). Every evening the program offers a different music style: on the first evening you get to dance to the Peruvian Cumbia, then listen to French rock on the second night and finish with Swing and Jazz. Nuits Atypiques Festival

This multidisciplinary festival in South Gironde has been taking place every summer since 1992. During the months of July (July 1-28) 17 events will take places in 15 towns in the Gironde department: Bassanne, Bazas, Bernos-Beaulac, Cadillac, Cazalis, Cudos,Gajac, La Réole, Podensac, Preignac, Saint-Macaire, Saint-Michelde-Castelnau,

Summers of Music in Medoc

Les Estivales de Musique en Medoc is the only music festival in France dedicated exclusively to young laureates of international competitions.  The festival was created in 2003 to discover new talents in classical music. The concerts are hosted in some of the most prestigious châteaux in the Medoc area and are followed by wine tastings. Seven concerts will be performed in different châteaux Between July 3 and July 13 – See the full program here.

CULTURE

Dance show by three famous choreographers

A co-production of the National Opera of Bordeaux and the Opera of Limoges presents an evening of three works by three famous choreographers: Petite Mort by Jiří KyliánLe Chant du compagnon errant by Maurice Béjart and Le Concert (ou Les Malheurs de chacun) by Jerome Robbins. The last show will be presented at the Opera of Bordeaux on July 6.

An expo of paintings of the streets of Bordeaux will be presented at la Cour Malby until July 8. The paintings are part of a contest organized by Agora des Arts.

Chromatic Shadow Exhibition

Exhibition dedicated to Jack London

A photography exhibition that follows the life and the work of the famous author, Jack London, will be presented in the Musée d’Aquitaine from May 29 to December 2. Besides photographs, the museum will put on display many objects and documents from his journey through the islands of the South Pacific, San Francisco and Sydney between 1907 and 1909. New exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts

“Par delà les frontières” is a new exhibition displaying materials representing relations and cooperation of American and Bordelaise artists, such as photographs, design pieces, interviews, videos and more. Although there aren’t any huge events in the center of Bordeaux, like the wine festival next week, there is still a big variety of smaller fun events to entertain you and your families this weekend. Jazz lovers are going to enjoy this weekend with two Jazz festivals very close to Bordeaux. Other surprises in the music scene include the Open air festival in Cenon and the So Good festival in Canéjan. Of course it’s not all about music, there are food events, new art expos and even a Mojito festival.

Bordeaux Open Air #1

The first part of the third edition of the Bordeaux Open Air festival will take place on June 10 in Parc Palmer in Cenon. Bordeaux Open Air is a series of summer free electronic music events, all set in different locations and with a great city vibe to them. The second and third parts of the festival will take place on July 22 and August 12 in Jardin Public and Parc Palmer, respectively.

Les Epicuriales

This is the last weekend of the event that has become an early summer Bordelaise tradition. For its 24th edition les Epicuriales festival transforms Allées de Tourny (next to the Opera) to a  gastronomic heaven with about twenty restaurants set up especially for the event. During the 16 days of the festival, the restaurants are open to the public for lunch and dinner.

Festival Le Haillan Chanté

The 9th edition of the singing festival, Le Haillan Chanté, is taking place on June 5-9 in Le Haillan. French songs lovers will adore this event as it is full with performances of both current and more nostalgic songs. There is a long list of performers participating in the event, some of the names are: Michel Jonasz, Loïc Lantoine, Melissmell, Barbara Carlotti, Presque Oui, Wally, Hildebrandt, Jacques et Jacques, Hinamé, Marc Dessolas, Tiou, Eskelina, Buridane.  The two main venues where the events will take place are L’Entrepôt and the Théâtre de verdure.

Fete de mojito

La Fête du Mojito will take place this weekend (June 7-9) all over France with music, special activities and happy hour prices on Mojitos (up to 50% off). Bordeaux is not an acceptation and many bars in the city are going to participate is the festival with special evenings dedicated to the Cuban famous cocktail, among them La Tencha, The grizzly pub, the Bodega and Casa Latina. So Good Fest

Le So Good Fest is an electronic music festival of the Gironde department that takes place every year at Plaine du Courneau in Canéjan. The 8th edition of the festival will take place on June 8-9 and will include a two day lineup of French and international artists in the Electro, Dub and Techno music.

Jazz and Blues Festival in Leognan

The 23rd edition of the Jazz and Blues Festival of Leognan will take place as part of Leognan’s 300 years anniversary celebrations. la Fête de l’Huître

The 18th edition of la Fête de l’Huître will take place on June 8-9 in the center of Saint Augustin neighborhood in Bordeaux. During the day, you will see plenty of people who come to enjoy oysters and other goodies that the festival has to offer, while the ones who will stay for the evening will enjoy free concerts (LITTLE MONKEY, HS STREET BAND). The Hermione ship arrives to Bordeaux

Hermione, the impressive ship, once used by La fayette, will arrive to Bordeaux on June 8. The ship will pass under the Chaban-Delmas bridge at 14: 45 and after turning at the Miroir d’Eau, will dock next to Ponton Quai des Marques until it’s departure on June 14 (20:20). During its stay in Bordeaux you have the chance to visit the ship and meet the crew. The visit lasts up to 30 minutes and the price is 5 €  for adults and 2 € for 6-15 years old. Trajectoires

Trajectoires is a unique cultural event where talented students of music, theater and choreography will perform their works of art to pass their diploma. Around 50 different performances of theater, comedy, dance and music will be put on stage in different locations in Bordeaux. Six concerts will be given in Saint Genès this weekend (June 8-10) by the students of the Ancients instruments department of the Conservatoire de Bordeaux. Festival Jazz 360

This is the 9th edition of the Jazz 360 festival whose goal is to support the creation of Jazz music. During the five days of the festival more than 50 professional and young artists will take the stage for nine free and four payed concerts. it will take place on June 7-10 in five different locations: Langoiran, Cénac, Camblanes-et-Meynac, Quinsac and Latresne.  For more details visit the site of the festival.

Fête Vigneronne

This Saturday (June 9)  Sainte-Croix-du-Mont invites you to the Fête Vigneronne. This is a gastronomic and a wine event in Château de Tastes, where visitors will  taste the wine of the château  and take part in different activities such as an art exposition, orchestra concert and a lunch prepared from the products of the region. Arty Garden Party

Big Bang- Air and Space Festival

The Big Bang festival in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles will take place on June 5-10. The third edition of the air and space festival is dedicated to art and science and is promised to be both educative and entertaining. Le Printemps des Doudous

Le printemps des doudous is a  music festival for kids that will take place June 9 in the Bastide neighborhood. The program will include shows, workshops and sport activities for kids such as yoga, gym kids and more. Bambino Party

This weekend (June 9-10) l’Île aux enfants in Hourtin will hold a kids festival for children up to 12 years old. The theme of the festival is the wild west and the kids will be turned to little cowboys and Indians. For more details click here.

CULTURE

Odyssée de L’espace – Auditorium de Bordeaux

For this final concert of the symphonic season, the National Orchestra of Bordeaux chose to take on a more cinematic sound. The concert is called the Space Odyssey and besides the theme from Kubrick’s famous movie will include other pieces celebrating space like Start Wars. The concerts will take place June 7-8 at the Auditorium of Bordeaux.

Belle Gueules de Bordeaux – Photography 

A photography exhibition by the name of Belle Gueules de Bordeaux, will be presented in La Cité du Vin from June 8 to September 2. The photographs present 51 portraits of men and women working in the vineyards in the Bordeaux area  during the period of  12 months, as was captured by the photographer, Guillaume BONNAUD. Most of the works are presented at the entrance hall of La Cité du Vin and thus do not require a ticket to the museum.

Last chance to see the Wine and Music Expo

The art exposition at la Cité du Vin, named “Le vin & La musique, accords et désaccords“, reveals the relationship between wine and music through a visual journey that alternates between  paintings, music and stage art. Around 150 pieces of art will be put in place from French and European collections: ceramics, paintings, music books , instruments and more. The exposition has been running from march and will be presented at the museum until June 24. For more details and tickets check here.

Là bas – expo by Yakassum 

Art Social Club is an association created with the goal to connect between artists and art lovers. Every month the Art Social Club hosts different artists from different genres of arts. This weekend is heaven for geeks, with three days of the Bordeaux Geek Festival taking place at the Parc des Expositions. But there are more great events for those staying in town, such as the ODP music festival in Talence, the European Museums Night and the Portuguese market. If you want to leave the city you have a Picnic at the Vineyards festival.

Festivals, Salons and Special events

Bordeaux Geek Festival

Comics, science fiction, video games, parallel worlds, creative industries – you’ll find all of these at the next Bordeaux Geek festival (BGF), taking place May 19-21 at Parc des Expositions. The goal of this festival is to experience geek culture and share knowledge on topics that are at the heart of the Geek community 🙂 The BGF will bring together different players from these industries, among them: video artists, gamers, illustrators, designers, scientists, authors, comedians and more. The festival will include four big contests with quite impressive awards: BGF E-Sport, BGF Awards, BGF Makers and  BGF Comics.  Check out the full program for these three days.

ODP Music Festival in Peixotto

This is the fourth edition of the ODP Festival, whose objective is to raise funds for the orphans of firefighters that have died on duty. The festival will take place on  May 18-20 in Park Peixotto, in the center of Talence. Here is a list of some of the acts that will perform at the festival: NTM, alt-J, Ibeyi, Coeur de Pirate, BALOJI, Dätcha Mandala, Laurent Lamarca, Da silva officiel, Gauvain Sers, Les Négresses Vertes

The prices go from 35€ to 45€  for a day ticket, 60€ to 70€  for a two days pass and  100 € for a 3 days pass – see tickets.

European Museums Night

Like every year, thirteen museums and cultural establishments in Bordeaux will open their doors this Saturday (May 19) to the public for free exhibitions and activities. For the 14th edition of the European Museums Night the participating institutions invite the visitors for a cultural journey in 10 destinations: England, Italy, Spain, Greece, Island, Denmark, Portugal, Belgium, Germany and Netherlands, which is a great opportunity to explore the relations of Bordeaux with its neighbors.

Saint-Emilion by night

The European museums night event gives you a rare opportunity to discover Saint Emilion in a different way – a night tour. On May 19, the night watchman of Saint-Emilion will be waiting for you at Place du Clocher  with a lantern in hand for a night discovery of the village. The guide will walk you through the narrow streets, tell you the history of the medieval city and take you to the famous underground monuments. For more info.

Take your picnic to the Vineyard

Wine and picnics are two favorite French activities, so why not combine them? Usually, the vines, owned by the different chateaux can only be visited as part of a guided tour in the chateau, however this month you will have an opportunity to bring your own picnic basket and spend a great day with your family and friends in the vineyards. The principle is quite simple: You bring your own picnic and the chateau will provide the wine and entertainment.

Around 400 different wine domains are participating in the event taking place during the long weekend of May 19-21. More than 1000 activities are proposed to families by the participating chateaux, they will reflect the specialty of the chateaux and the area, among them: art workshops, concerts, bike tours and more.

Go to a secret event at the Festival de Caves

Festival de Caves (Cellars festival) is an underground theater festival, gathering a small number of spectators in cellars and other underground places throughout the city. In Bordeaux, the festival will take place on May 16-27 and will run the whole month of May in different cities in France.  So where are those city cellars we are talking about you ask? Well that’s the whole idea, these events are being kept secret and the locations will be revealed to those who reserved a spot only on the day of the show.

Salon de l’agriculture of Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Salon de l’agriculture  of Nouvelle Aquitaine is an annual ten days event where you get to discover the agricultural richness of our area through different information stands and activities. For example, a farm space with many animals and plants will be put in place and will provide interesting activities for both kids and adults. Another feature that may attract you is the Gastronomy and Wine space which will highlight the exceptional heritage of the region.

The Salon de l’agriculture is part of a larger event taking place at the same time (Foire Internationale de Bordeaux) and will take place on May 12-21 in Parc des Expositions. For more  info check out the website, for tickets click here.

Portuguese Art and Gastronomy Market

Musicians, artists and craftsmen, are coming to Cenon from the north of Portugal to introduce their culture during  this three day festival.  The program includes tasting  of Portuguese local products, stands of traditional art, concerts and more. Le Marché des créateurs

The 29th edition of the creators market (Marché des créateurs) will take place on May 18-19 at Place Camille Jullian (next to Utopia cinema). This market proposes a great variety of items giving everyone a chance to find something fitting their taste and budget: clothes, accessories, jewelry, decorations, kids accessories, toys and more.  Just a few days before mother’s day, this will be the perfect place to look for creative, original  and handmade gifts.  For more details check out the facebook page of the event.

CULTURE

Last chance to see the Digital Abysses expo 

If you still didn’t go to the incredible Base sous- Marine to see the currently running exhibition, this is your last chance. The Digital Abysses exhibition, by the digital artist Miguel Chevalier, will be presented until May 20, so hurry up.  His fantastic work of art explores nature through underwater plants and wildlife. Combining the characteristics of this unique place with the interactive digital installations makes it a special experience.

CAPC

Two new exhibitions of the artists Danh Vo and Daphné Le Sergent will be presented this week at the CAPC, Bordeaux’s museums of contemporary art. Pilleur de rêves- Philippe Mohlitz  

Philippe Moritz is a engraving Bordelaise artist. The exhibition (2 March – 4 June 2018) takes place in the Musée des Beaux-Arts art in Bordeaux and includes about 40 works of the artist.  For more info check out the site of the museum

Exhibition by Rodolphe Martinez

An exhibition of the artist Rodolphe Martinez about Venice takes place at Institut Bernard Magrez on May 10-20. Martinez has created around 40 pieces of art (paintings, designs, photographs and other mixed techniques) that is intended to describe his relationship with the city of Venice. Florilège – Jardin Boutanique

La bibliothèque du Jardin Botanique invites you to discover their special collection of ancient plants from several European countries and the herbarium from its collections.  The exhibition will run from May 15 to September 2. For more info.

TIC TAC – Play with time

Cap- Sciences invites you and your family to play and experiment with time. This special day (May 19) is proposed as part of the Clock’, les horloges du vivant  exhibition, with many activities such as: Hourglass, stop-motion, and cooking workshops, artistic creations, games  and more. The activities are open to kids older than 6 years old.

Les Chantiers de la Garonne

Les Chantiers de la Garonne, a perfect spot on the rive droite of the Garonne, where you can bury your feet in the sand and eat delicious food, is open for the summer. It seems like it’s going to be a sunny weekend and so a beach atmosphere, with a cold beer and an amazing view on Bordeaux seems  like time well spent.
