Do you know of any other Irish pubs or restaurants in Bordeaux or maybe a hidden gem in the suburbs of Bordeaux? Please comment below!

When my family and I decided to move from Paris to Bordeaux, practically everyone guaranteed that the hot weather is the real bonus of moving to the South of France. “No more rainy days being stuck at home with the kids” I thought to myself. Boy, was I wrong!
Although there are a lot of sunny and hot days in Bordeaux, not many people know that on average it’s raining here 170 days a year.
Almost every weekend I see people on social media asking: what do I do with the kids when it’s pouring rain outside and you can’t go to the park? Apparently a lot!!! You just have to know about it.
So I’ve made a list of all the fun indoor things you can do with your kids when it is raining in Bordeaux:

Cap sciences

If you want a fun activity which is also educative then Cap Sciences is the place for you. It is located on Quai de Bacalan, in a beautiful spot with a view on the Jacques Chaban-Delmas bridge. The museum proposes interactive exhibitions and activities all dedicated to different aspects of science. Another interesting feature of the museum are the workshops that are dedicated to kids of different age groups (3-6, 6-12 and 8-14 years old) among them you can find photography, molecular k kitchen, eco-citizens and more.  And while your kids are busy exploring the wonders of the universe, you can enjoy the amazing view of the Garonne river from the terraces of the “Cafe des sciences”.
The museum is open Tue- Fri from 14-18 and from 14 to 19 on weekends. The prices varies according to the exhibition and a 50% is given to holders of the Carte Jeunes.

An ancient military base, located in the Bastide neighborhood on the right side of the river, that has been turned into a place full of innovation and surprises for both parents and kids. And although it seems like a perfect spot for a sunny weather it has a lot to offer indoors as well, notably the skating park. As part of its environmental friendly agenda, the skate house is made of recycled materials and has a special cultural landscape of street art and electronic music. Your kids will love it!

In order to skate in the hangar you would have to pay a member fee of 5 and then 3 for the whole day every time you come. Open everyday except Monday.

However, Kart system is not only a karting place, you can easily make a family fun day out of it. To help them discover the digital world take them to an atelier at Magic Makers in Chartrons.  Every Saturday at 13:30 Magic Makers invites children and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 15 to learn programming like adults and to enjoy themselves with other potential coding geeks 🙂

La Parentèle for babies and toddlers

Last but not least, if your kids are too young for most of these activities, don’t be discouraged! La parentele hosts families with little kids every day except Sunday and it’s free. The Parentele is an indoor space for babies and toddlers where you will find a play area for different ages, a lot of toys, books, colors and a large space with coffee for parents to have a chat (while watching their kids of course). As the Parentele is open for all, it is limited for one hour and a half, but I guess for a toddler it is more than enough.

Concerts and shows:

With the opening of the beautiful new Bordeaux Métropole Arena in Floriac this January, the cultural life in Bordeaux has been flourishing.  The opening show was no other than Depeche mode and since then the list of the most popular acts has been growing from day to day. Here are some of the most popular acts scheduled for March. French people love their cultural life and the tickets are selling fast, so hurry up if you want to see one of these shows.

Lac des Cygnes

The famous Swan Lake ballet (4 March), performed by the Saint-Petersburg Ballet Theater will arrive in Bordeaux for one show at the Bordeaux Métropole Arena. Swan Lake is one the symbols of Russian ballet, making it a great cultural experience.

lake Swan in Bordeaux

Jamel Debbouze

Jamel Debbouze, one of France’s most successful comedians today will give a stand-up show at the new Bordeaux Métropole Arena (7 March).

Dirty Dancing

Those of us brought up in the 80s and the 90s cannot escape the nostalgic feeling when hearing the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, so what’s better than seeing those sexy moves on stage (22 March). I admit that hearing the dialogues in French might be  a bit strange, but I’m sure that the music, the costumes and the dance routines will make up for it. The musical will be performed at the Bordeaux Arena as well.

There are many other great shows, concerts and musicals in the Bordeaux Métropole Arena, so check out their program of events.

 Art

Pilleur de rêves- Philippe Mohlitz

Philippe Moritz is a engraving Bordelaise artist. The exhibition (2 March – 4 June 2018) that will take place in the Musée des Beaux-Arts art in Bordeaux will include about 40 works of the artist.

Base Sous-Marine

After 4 months of renovation the incredible Base sous- Marine reopens its doors to the public on March 9, with a launch of a new exhibition and a new space of 480m2.  This is one of the most unique places you can find in Bordeaux. Built by the Germans during the second World War, this old submarine has been converted into a space dedicated to contemporary arts, which allows you to enjoy the space itself no less than the art presented there. The program this year varies between digital arts, street art and visual arts.

Saint Patrick’s day

Saint Patrick’s day is always a good opportunity to get drunk from an Irish beer or whisky while listening to good music. But since we are in Bordeaux and not in Dublin,  you should know where to go in order to enjoy that day. Among the many places that will probably celebrate it in some way, there are two that have already announced live music and lots of beer specially for Saint Patrick’s day:

Fête de la Saint Patrick

in Espace d’Ornon – 16 March.

B11 La Bodega

in Mérignac – will celebrate St. Patrick with the Booze Brother on 17 March.

As we’ll approach the St. Patrick’s day more bars will probably announce some special events. In any case, closer to that date we’ll publish a full list of Irish bars in and around Bordeaux were you’ll be able to celebrate St. Patrick’s day. So keep an eye on our next posts to be updated.

These are some of the biggest and interesting events that will take place in Bordeaux in March, so as you see the schedule is quite packed. However, if you know of any other event, concert, festival or exhibition that I’ve missed please let us know in the comments bellow!
