Founded in the 13th century along one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is built from the white limestone typical of many towns in the Charente region. The village unfolds like an amphitheater, with its hanging balconies draped in flowers and greenery.
Perched on the Dronne River, Aubeterre stretches across both a hilltop and a valley, connected by narrow, winding streets lined with beautiful houses and breathtaking views. Aubeterre may be a small village, but it’s packed with charming streets and must-see spots. If you’re visiting for a day, here’s the perfect route to explore its highlights.
Place Ludovic Trarieux – The Heart of the Village
Begin your visit at Place Ludovic Trarieux, the lively main square named after Ludovic Trarieux, a local-born politician and founder of the Ligue Française pour la Défense des Droits de l’Homme (The Human Rights League of France). The square is lined with cafés, restaurants, and boutiques, making it the perfect spot to soak in the village atmosphere.
For a light lunch, Crêperie de la Source is a lovely choice, offering delicious crêpes with an amazing view. After a relaxing break, it’s time to visit the village’s most famous monument.
The Underground Church – Aubeterre’s Most Impressive Landmark
If there’s one thing you absolutely can’t miss in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, it’s the breathtaking Église Souterraine Saint-Jean.
This remarkable monolithic church was carved from a single cliff in the 7th century and later expanded in the 12th century by Benedictine monks. It’s unlike anything else in the region, with a towering 20-meter-high interior, a relic pit, a necropolis with 160 stone coffins, and 18-meter-high galleries—all sculpted from the same rock.

Wander Through Aubeterre’s Picture-Perfect Streets
From the church, start descending toward the lower part of the village along Rue Barbichon, where you’ll find stunning views of the valley. Then, turn right onto Rue Barbecane, which leads to Place Merkes Merval, an old lavoir (washing place). This picturesque spot is a great place to admire Aubeterre’s hanging balconies covered in flowers.
From here, continue back up to the main square, making a few stops along the way:

Discover the Western Side of the Village
Aubeterre’s western quarter is full of steep, winding streets and historic houses that are worth exploring. One of its most fascinating landmarks is the Church of Saint-Jacques.
Originally a collegiate church, it was heavily damaged in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion. While most of the church was rebuilt in the 18th century, its original Romanesque facade is still intact—and it’s a true masterpiece, featuring intricate arches and sculpted capitals.
Relax at Aubeterre’s Riverside Beach
If you’re visiting on a warm day, why not end your trip with some beach time? Aubeterre-sur-Dronne has a lovely riverside beach where you can cool off and unwind.
To get there, cross the bridge over the river and turn right. The beach is part of the Camping Base de Loisirs d’Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, which also offers plenty of fun water activities like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUPs). See more details here.

Where to park in Aubeterre sur Dronne
There are two big free parking spaces in Aubeterre sur Dronne. The central one is located just in front of the tourist office on Place du Champ de Foire. If there’s no space there, you can go higher to the northern parking lot next to Chemin du Cimetière.
